The action really picks up in Marvel’s Jessica Jones: Playing with Fire in Season 1 Episode 4: “This Is Going to Hurt”. Again written by Vita Ayala, who penned Episode 3, we find out more about Jessie’s boyfriend Brendan. The one nobody in the commune likes.

As I said in last episode’s review, I’ll be giving away more spoilers from here on, so you’ve been warned.

Yup, that’s got to hurt

We also get a nice allusion to Jessica’s past, for those who are familiar with it from either the comic books or the Netflix series.

“A jar of purple and silver glitter.

You’ve got to be kidding me. She closes her eyes and counts to ten. Why’s it have to be purple?

Moreover, Jessica goes toe to toe with a supervillain for the first time in this Serial Box exclusive.

There’s a reason this episode of Marvel’s Jessica Jones: Playing with Fire is called “This Is Going to Hurt”.

It was quite a thrill to see Jessica going up against Sebastian Shaw, the mysterious owner of the Hellfire Club. Those of us who are Marvel fans of course know exactly what Shaw is capable of doing. What’s great about this encounter is that Jessica has absolutely no idea what she’s getting herself into in this fight.

“‘You’ll find me more of a challenge than the normal fare.’ He grins at her, teeth large and on the gray side of white.

“He throws a fist, and she catches it. It stings her palm, hurting in a way that she doesn’t expect.

“‘The f–'”

Things are heating up

As I mentioned in my Episode 1 review, even though I’m a comic book geek, it was the Netflix series that introduced me to Jessica Jones.

I haven’t checked yet if Jessica and Shaw have already faced off in the comics, but man, it was really fun to see them collide here. Great writing again by Ayala, who really made me feel their battle even without the usual comic book art.

Things are heating up in Marvel’s Jessica Jones: Playing with Fire, pun intended. And this episode ends with a real cliffhanger, so I can’t wait to read Episode 5.

What’s even more exciting? The title of Season 1 Episode 5 is: “A Visit from Old Friends”.

Stay tuned!
