BLACKPINK debuted at No. 2 in the UK’s Official Albums Chart Top 100 — and they nearly defeated the legendary British rock band Queen plus Adam Lambert with their last-minute challenge.

This is the biggest debut ever by a Korean female act in the album chart of the world’s third-biggest music market. Not only that, but BLACKPINK also made history in Germany, the world’s fourth-biggest music market. “THE ALBUM” debuted at No. 7 in Germany, making BLACKPINK the first Korean female act to pull off this feat.

Queens vs Queen

BLACKPINK nearly pulled off an epic come-from-behind victory over Queen and Adam Lambert’s “Live Around The World”. While BLACKPINK’s “THE ALBUM” was just tracking at No. 6 during the mid-week update of the albums chart, a late surge saw the K-pop girl group closing the gap significantly to set up a photo finish.

Queen, however, emerged victorious, making history with their first No. 1 album in the UK in 25 years.

“South Korean girl group Blackpink enter at Number 2 this week with their debut Korean-language album titled The Album. Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose also had the best-selling cassette album of the week, shifting an impressive 5,700 copies on the format.”

Incidentally, “THE ALBUM” cassette editions are exclusive to the UK.

BLACKPINK fans — called BLINKS — in the UK had worked hard to make the late surge possible. Their efforts helped the K-pop girl group make history once again.

BLACKPINK has been breaking records with the release of their first ever full album in South Korea — four years after they debuted on Aug. 8, 2016.

On the first day of the physical album launch on Oct. 6, “THE ALBUM” sold 589,310 copies, according to the official count on Hanteo Chart.

These staggering numbers mean that in one day, BLACKPINK broke the highest first-day sales record for girl groups (274,472 copies for “More & More” by TWICE) and highest first-week sales record for girl groups (389,334 copies for “Oneiric Diary” by IZ*ONE). Moreover, with this, “THE ALBUM” has already become the best-selling girl group album on Hanteo and Gaon Album Chart.
