With the launch of its first consumer brand, QONN8Q (pronounced “Connect”), Singapore startup QOSMOSYS aims to make reserving a spot on a space mission as easy as booking a seat on a plane. QOSMOSYS was founded in 2020 with the goal of helping usher in a new business era of peaceful space colonization.

“Where most space industry players explore vertical technologies with a B2B perspective, I see QOSMOSYS taking risks to rely on the capacity of digital platforms to empower every individual to contribute to create strong communities as a source of value to enforce the dreams and visions of the masses based on what technologies can give best,” said QOSMOSYS Founder and CEO François Dubrulle in a press statement.

“Youngjae and Minnie surprised me. Their acting was very natural even though it was their first time,” said legendary South Korean sitcom hitmaker and “So Not Worth It” director Kwon Ik-joon in the behind the scenes featurette.

I heartily agree. While I love all eight major characters of “So Not Worth It“, the ones played by K-pop idols Youngjae of GOT7 and Minnie of (G)I-DLE made me laugh the most. And not just because of the iconic kimchi slap. Spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched “So Not Worth It”.

Pride and prejudice: LGBTQIA+ representation matters

Technology column header

June is Pride Month, and the Philippines owns the distinction of having Southeast Asia’s largest Pride festival, Metro Manila Pride, which this year will be a virtual march and festival at 7 PM on June 26.

Since 2016, the volunteer-managed, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization Metro Manila Pride has been holding an annual, open-access Pride event that is both a celebration and a mass protest, with this year’s theme being “SULONG, VAKLASH! Sama-samang Pag-aklas Ang Ating Lunas”. In a predominantly Roman Catholic country like the Philippines, it is heartening to see more and more Filipinos fighting for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, and reclaiming the legacy of gender equality and inclusivity of our pre-colonial, pre-Christian past and the gender-fluid societies of our ancestors.

That he chose the nickname “The Last Stylebender” should tell you that Ultimate Fighting Championship Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya is a fan of the anime-influenced American animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. In fact, he even has a tattoo of his favorite character from the show, Toph Beifong, on his forearm. But that’s just scratching the surface of how deep the obsession of this longtime Naruto fan and self-proclaimed anime nerd is.

“Oh, and this bit right here is very significant, hence the intro. ‘Coz he’s the Grim Reaper, and the Grim Reaper is supposed to be the god of death. And I was like, nah, I know the real god of death. Shinigami called Ryuk. So if you know, you know. I took my Death Note out. I put his name in it,” Adesanya said in a video he uploaded to his official YouTube channel to break down UFC 243, where he became the undisputed UFC Middleweight Champion by stopping “The Reaper” Robert Whittaker in the second round with a technical knockout.

Babaylan, mangkukulam: Demonizing gender-fluid past

Technology column header

Ikaw ang ikaanim na anak ng ikaanim na anak, ang babaylang-mandirigma. Manggagamot at sundalo (You are the sixth child of the sixth child, the babaylan-mandirigma. Healer and warrior).”

One of the great things about the popularity of the Netflix Original Anime Series “TRESE” is that it has made more Filipinos aware of Philippine mythology and the pre-colonial, pre-Christian past of the Philippines. Our colonization by Spain, which occupied these islands for 333 years, and its efforts to erase and demonize our past has resulted in many of us becoming unfamiliar with our own roots, tales, and deities. As if Philippine history only started when the Spanish expedition led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan stumbled upon these islands in 1521. Thankfully, “TRESE”, which is based on the critically acclaimed Philippine graphic novels written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by KaJO Baldisimo, may encourage curious viewers to learn more about the babaylan and the indigenous religions in the Philippines, and about the aswang, tikbalang, tiyanak, and other creatures of Philippine folklore shown in the anime series.
