It’s Friday the 13th but I feel very fortunate listening to the beautiful song “Sugat” by Ben&Ben featuring Munimuni and watching the music video.

Isang kanta para sa lahat ng may dinadala. Patawarin ang sarili at pakawalan ang nakaraan (A song for everyone who feels the weight of the world. Forgive yourself and let go of the past),” the Philippine folk-pop band tweeted to announce the release of its new single at midnight on Aug. 13. What makes this poignant music video even more powerful is that it was fittingly shot at Pinto Art Museum, which seeks to give Filipinos a better appreciation of our past and make Philippine art and culture more accessible — and highly Instagrammable. At least, back when COVID-19 had not yet changed the world.

We don’t have to be prisoners

Pahilumin, mga sugat
Di ikaw ang iyong nakaraan”

“Heal the wounds. You are not your past,” Ben&Ben and Munimuni urge us in “Sugat”, whose powerful lyrics were written by Paolo Benjamin and Toni Muñoz.

“Sugat” is trending on both YouTube and Twitter, and judging by the comments and tweets, this latest Ben&Ben single is resonating with a lot of people, particularly in the face of all the challenges we are facing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic, which changed the whole world almost overnight and disrupted all our lives thanks to social distancing, lockdowns, and other measures, has made it more important than ever to protect our mental health.

It’s easy to become sad, overwhelmed, frustrated, fearful, or angry — and to find ourselves dwelling on the past more than ever.

“Sugat” reminds us that clinging to the past can result in self-inflicted wounds and prevent us from moving forward.

“Kung ayaw mong simulang patawarin ang nakaraan
Paano ka lalayo?
Paano ka tatayo?
Ang paglaya’y naghihintay sa’yo”

“If you don’t want to begin forgiving the past, how can you move on? How can you get back on your feet? Freedom is waiting for you,” the song tells us.

Healing begins when we realize that we aren’t forced to stay in this torture room of past hurts. That we always held the key to unlocking the door.
