“I think our world is running down like a broken machine.” Dejah Thoris (Vol. 3) #6 starts with this quote. An apt one for their world and our own.
Honestly, I don’t know much about Edgar Rice Burroughs’ works apart of course from Tarzan (no relation to Jungle Girl). I also didn’t watch the “John Carter” movie, which was based on Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars”.
This was the first book in his Barsoom series of novels, and this is where he introduced Dejah Thoris. But I’m encountering her for the first time in this Dynamite Entertainment comic book series. Spoilers ahead.
The killer strikes
What happens when a princess encounters her nightmare in the flesh?
“A killer, armored in jewels and precious alloys, brandishing an archaic weapon of the forever days.
“He was waiting for them here. Waiting to strike.
“Already, he has cut down Morohk, their Kaldane ally.”
In the case of Deja Thoris, she stands her ground while the killer attacks. Firing twin blasters at her nightmare.
Winter is coming
Meanwhile, the former Jeddak of the Thark Nation tells Thuvia of Ptarth not to call him Jeddak anymore.
And she asks him not to address her as Thuvia of Ptarth anymore, because Ptarth has fallen to the enemy.
Winter has come to Barsoom.
I think our world is running down like a broken machine.
“I agree. It’s this winter… the forever myths speak of a long cold that will usher Barsoom to its grave. I think this is it. Our world is dying…”
This issue is actually the end of Arc 2 in this series by Dan Abnett (Guardians Of The Galaxy, Aquaman) and Vasco Georgiev (Xena). Dejah Thoris (Vol. 3) #6 has made me glad I finally met Dejah Thoris — and now I would like to get to know her more.
