Now this is a remarkable feat in the COVID-19 era. The “Train to Busan” sequel “Peninsula” took less than four days to surpass a million moviegoers. It was released in South Korea on July 15.

The Korean Film Council announced on the morning of July 18 that the film already has a total of 1,000,790 moviegoers as of 8:10 AM Korea time (7:10 AM Philippines time), according to the Soompi article.

“Notably, ‘Peninsula’ broke past the 1 million mark at the same speed as the hit movie ‘Ode to My Father,’ which currently holds the record for the fourth highest-grossing film in the history of Korean cinema. The feat is all the more impressive considering the current state of the movie theater industry, which was hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Four years after “Train to Busan” showed the total decimation of South Korea, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us “Peninsula”.

The critically acclaimed box office hit “Train to Busan” starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, and Ma Dong-seok captivated audiences worldwide. It gave a different and highly entertaining take on the zombie apocalypse genre. In fact, most of the movie took place on the titular train to Busan.

“Peninsula” is the next nail-biting chapter in this post-apocalyptic world. Here’s the synopsis from the official movie page published by its US distributor Well Go USA Entertainment. The movie’s US theatrical release date is Aug. 7.

Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive.

When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best — or worst — of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.

I loved “Train to Busan”, and I certainly can’t wait to see what “Peninsula” has in store for us.

Here’s the official trailer.
