When Mother is a monster, what can a daughter do? Even if that daughter is Vampirella. Whom Lilith her mother calls simply “the girl”.
Dynamite Entertainment‘s Vampirella (Vol. 5) #11 concludes the “Flight Plan” story arc about the tragic plane crash that killed nearly a thousand people. And ended the life “the girl” had built as “Ella Normandy”.
It is another haunting tale by Christopher Priest, brought to life by the gorgeous yet disturbing art of Ergün Gündüz. She is but one of her hundreds of daughters. But she is her only mother.
Spoilers ahead.
Lilith and Draculina
Last issue, we saw a dark goddess wreaking terrible vengeance on her enemies.
Yet who is the real enemy? And who is the one seeking vengeance?
She talks to the trauma specialist working with the airline. Seeking help.
“I don’t know I’m here,” she says.
“Sure you do. Your whole world has changed, Ella -” he says.
She interrupts him.
“My name is not ‘Ella.'”
She talks about her mother. A mother who has now given birth to a new daughter.
Lilith gives her a name. Draculina.
Mother and daughter
Draculina wants to please Mother.
Lilith: “Well done nonetheless.”
Draculina: “No, Mother, I suck at this… but I’m willing to learn.”
She asks Mother if she is now a vampire.
Mother says no. “Human shall you remain… to tread where only a human may.”
And Ella?
Ella has come to Atlanta.
But there is no Ella.
Only the daughter her mother calls simply “the girl”.
