Before Dynamite Entertainment, I didn’t know Bettie Page. An American model whose heyday in the 50s immortalized her as the Queen of Pinups, the real-life Bettie Page was a remarkable woman who became an iconic figure in pop culture.

Which is why I’m happy to meet Bettie through Karla Pacheco’s (Spider-Woman) new series, which is beautifully illustrated by Vincenzo Federici (Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep).

Bettie Page (Vol. 4) #1 takes place in 1954, giving an alternate history of what would have happened if the starlet had made it big in Hollywood. In an interview with The Beat, Pacheco explained why Bettie remains a relevant icon.

“Bettie Page never received her chance at true stardom. She was abused at so many points of her life, and it’s utterly heartbreaking. I’ll be honest, I was almost hesitant to take on this project because of that. I didn’t want to be light and flippant about someone who’d endured so much. It was only at the end of her life she was even able to reclaim her name and image. But ultimately she did. And while this book is far from an autobiography, I feel like we’re taking a look at what Bettie could have been if she’d been given her chance.”

James Bond: Reimagining the man with the Midas touch

Arguably the best James Bond villain, and certainly the one with most memorable quote ("No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!"), Goldfinger has been reimagined in Greg Pak's incredible 007 series.

James Bond 007 Vol. 2 HC

Arguably the best James Bond villain, and certainly the one with most memorable quote (“No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!”), Goldfinger has been reimagined in Greg Pak’s incredible 007 series.

This is a much scarier Goldfinger, “the most ruthless sociopath in the world”, as the previews described him. And facing him is a deadlier, more desperate James Bond than the one we know from the film named after this villain.

Dynamite Entertainment‘s James Bond 007 Vol. 2 HC collects issues 7-12 of Pak’s series. And just as James Bond: Origin gave us a grittier teenage version of Bond, so too does this series show us a more grounded adult version of 007. With no Pussy Galore in sight.

Dejah Thoris: The princess and the broken machine

"I think our world is running down like a broken machine." Dejah Thoris (Vol. 3) #6 starts with this quote. It seems an apt one for their world and our own.

“I think our world is running down like a broken machine.” Dejah Thoris (Vol. 3) #6 starts with this quote. An apt one for their world and our own.

Honestly, I don’t know much about Edgar Rice Burroughs’ works apart of course from Tarzan (no relation to Jungle Girl). I also didn’t watch the “John Carter” movie, which was based on Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars”.

This was the first book in his Barsoom series of novels, and this is where he introduced Dejah Thoris. But I’m encountering her for the first time in this Dynamite Entertainment comic book series. Spoilers ahead.

Death of Nancy Drew: Can the Hardy Boys solve this?

Has the death of Nancy Drew shocked you? Now her best friends Frank and Joe Hardy are investigating what exactly happened on the night of Nancy's death.

The Death of Nancy Drew #2

Has the death of Nancy Drew shocked you? Now her best friends Frank and Joe Hardy are investigating what exactly happened on the night of Nancy’s death.

Dynamite Entertainment‘s The Death of Nancy Drew #2 had me hooked from the start. And I’m not even really a fan of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. But I’m enjoying this noirish tale that Anthony Del Col (Kill Shakespeare, Luke Cage) has crafted, which Eisner Award winner Joe Eisma (Morning Glories, Riverdale) is bringing to gritty life.

And if you think Nancy, Frank, and Joe are the only Stratemeyer Syndicate characters in this fascinating series, think again. Spoilers ahead.

No gadgets. No martinis. No larger-than-life villains. Just the adventures of a teenage James Bond during World War II. And what a fascinating read it is.

James Bond: Origin Vol. 2 HC
Writer: Jeff Parker

No gadgets. No martinis. And no larger-than-life villains. Just the adventures of a teenage James Bond during World War II. And what a fascinating read it is.

Dynamite Entertainment‘s James Bond: Origin Vol. 2 hardcover collects James Bond: Origin #7–12. The James Bond: Origin series fleshes out Bond’s life before the first novel of Ian Fleming introduced him to the world.

It takes place during World War II, when he was just starting his career as a spy. I’m not really a Bond fan, but I really enjoyed this collection. Spoilers ahead.

Mars Attacks Red Sonja and our money’s on her

Dynamite Entertainment presents Mars Attacks Red Sonja! and the world will never be the same. Image credit: Dynamite Entertainment

It’s the crossover we never knew we wanted! Dynamite Entertainment presents Mars Attacks Red Sonja and the world will never be the same.

I’m a Tim Burton fan but I have to admit I didn’t exactly love “Mars Attacks!” the first time I saw it. Still, the movie had its cheesy charm and trademark Burton absurdity. Over the years I’ve grown more fond of it. Add to that the fact that I love Red Sonja. So you can imagine how excited I am to read this upcoming miniseries from writer John Layman (Chew, Detective Comics) and artist Fran Strukan (The Shape of Elvira).

“This is a book I actively pushed Dynamite to do, and I bugged them and bugged them until they finally approved it because I wouldn’t go away. I’m a huge fan of both properties, and the idea of mixing violent barbarian sword & sorcery with ultra-violent over-the-top retro sci-fi is simply irresistible to me,” Layman said in a press statement.
