(UPDATE) It took four years for BLACKPINK to launch their first full album in South Korea. It took just a day, however, for BLACKPINK to set a new Hanteo girl group record. BLACKPINK has sold 589,310 copies of their physical album in their home country on Day 1. This is according to the official count on Hanteo Chart. BLACKPINK’s “THE ALBUM” is the first girl group album to sell 500,000 copies on Hanteo. In just one day, it has already become the best-selling girl group album on Hanteo and Gaon.

Earlier, Hanteo Chart had officially counted and announced that the first full album of BLACKPINK has already sold 586,292 copies as of 6:20 PM Korea Standard Time (5:20 PM Philippine Standard Time). With this, BLACKPINK has broken the highest first-day sales record for girl groups held by TWICE for “More & More” (274,472). Not only that, but BLACKPINK has also set a new Hanteo record for Initial Chodong (first week of release) sales. BLACKPINK broke the record for highest Initial Chodong sales by girl groups held by IZ*ONE for “Oneiric Diary” (389,334 copies).

Breaking records

Prior to the launch of their first full album in South Korea, called simply “THE ALBUM”, BLACKPINK had already set a K-pop girl group record, with more than one million stock pre-orders.

Meanwhile, in the US, “THE ALBUM” is reportedly on pace to debut at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

“The South Korean girl group’s debut full-length, aptly titled The Album, is projected to move 110,000-125,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, good for a second-place bow behind 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s Savage Mode II (170,000-195,000 units). That sum includes 90,000-100,000 ‘pure’ sales derived from physical and digital album sales, while the rest will come from streams and individual track downloads.

“Although The Album is headed for a No. 2 overall debut, it should easily score the biggest sales of the week, as the bulk of Savage Mode II’s units will come from streaming. The Album’s sales are bolstered by four deluxe CD editions and over three dozen digital album/merchandise bundles available on Blackpink’s website.”
