Team Barbie of UnionBank crowned ULeague champs

In the end, there can be only one. And that one turned out to be the Team Barbie Mobile Legends: Bang Bang team of Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank).

The ULeague Mobile Legends Charity Clash Tournament reached an epic finale with two esports teams from UnionBank battling it out for the ULeague Championship title. Team Barbie bested Tech Warriors and teams from City Savings Bank, Dragonpay, Salarium, and UBX to claim the title and a cash prize of Php30,000.

Donations totaling Php135,000 from participating companies throughout the entire ULeague season will be turned over to tournament beneficiaries Caritas Manila and Kalipay Negrense Foundation to support their COVID-19 relief programs.

“The ULeague Mobile Legends Charity Clash Tournament was born out of UnionBank’s internal tournament for employee engagement called UGames,” said UnionBank Senior Vice President and Fintech Group Head Arvie de Vera in a press statement.

“UGames started before the pandemic, and following the lockdown quickly shifted to being fully digital. It turned out to be the perfect venue to engage employees while working from home. Matches were held after hours and streamed online. It started getting a lot of attention and interest, not just from UnionBank but our partners as well. So we created ULeague to open it up to our subsidiaries and partners including corporates, fintechs, and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). The reception was overwhelming, and esports became a great venue for engagement and camaraderie with colleagues, partners, sister companies, and customers alike,” De Vera said.

ULeague was made possible through the collaboration of UnionBank and its partners Distributed Ledger Technology Association of the Philippines, Fintech Philippines Association, Tech Up Pilipinas Inc., and UnionBank’s online donation and payment collection platform UShare.

Thirty-two esports teams from several companies, including UnionBank, its subsidiaries City Savings Bank, UBX and PETNET Inc., and its fintech partners Coins.ph, XLOG, PDAX, Data Analytics Ventures, Inc., Dragonpay, Salarium, Banana Fintech, and EOI Digital, competed in a virtual tournament composed of four qualifying rounds featuring the popular mobile game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang during the quarantine period.
