In “Pacific Rim”, humanity built massive robots called Jaegers. This allowed them to go toe to toe with giant monsters called Kaiju. Jason Howard’s new action comic book series Big Girls is kind of like that. Except here, it’s men who have turned into giant monsters. And now it’s up to Big Girls like the 300-foot-tall Ember to stop them.

Critically acclaimed artist Howard was Warren Ellis’ collaborator on the science fiction comic book series Trees. This time, he will be the writer and artist of this new series that Image Comics is launching in August.

Fast-paced action

Big Girls is inspired by my childhood love of giant monster movies like King Kong and Godzilla, and big robot anime like Robotech and Evangelion,” Howard said in an exclusive scoop on the Big Girls announcement with The Hollywood Reporter.

Howard added that this was “the perfect comic for both the dynamic sci-fi I like to draw and for my writer side to examine questions of power, inequality and the complexity of growing up.”

Meanwhile, this is what Ellis said about his Trees collaborator’s new series, according to the Image Comics press statement.

Big Girls is next-level science fiction energy from one of the great powerhouses of American comics.”

So, what do we know about the protagonist Ember? Well, she writes poetry, loves to read, and she’s a 300-foot-tall full-time monster killer! As you can see from these preview pages that Image Comics provided Digital Life Asia, Ember is pretty badass.

If you love fast-paced action in the vein of the John Wick movies and the Paper Girls comic book series, you’ll enjoy Big Girls. Plus, as you can see, it features bigger-than-life characters just like the Godzilla and Pacific Rim movies. Let’s just pretend the second Pacific Rim movie never happened.

Big Girls #1 will be available at comic book shops on August 12.

It will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

So, let’s see: I love comic books, Pacific Rim, Godzilla, John Wick, and science fiction. And I’ll be reading Paper Girls soon.

Guess I’m getting Big Girls in August.
