Mars Attacks Red Sonja and our money’s on her

It’s the crossover we never knew we wanted! Dynamite Entertainment presents Mars Attacks Red Sonja and the world will never be the same.

I’m a Tim Burton fan but I have to admit I didn’t exactly love “Mars Attacks!” the first time I saw it. Still, the movie had its cheesy charm and trademark Burton absurdity. Over the years I’ve grown more fond of it. Add to that the fact that I love Red Sonja. So you can imagine how excited I am to read this upcoming miniseries from writer John Layman (Chew, Detective Comics) and artist Fran Strukan (The Shape of Elvira).

“This is a book I actively pushed Dynamite to do, and I bugged them and bugged them until they finally approved it because I wouldn’t go away. I’m a huge fan of both properties, and the idea of mixing violent barbarian sword & sorcery with ultra-violent over-the-top retro sci-fi is simply irresistible to me,” Layman said in a press statement.

Red Sonja: Bless the beasts and the children

She is Sonja the Red, the Master of War. But is anyone really its master? Or, as Red Sonja (Vol. 5) #16 seems to tell us, is the truth that no one really wins in a war?

Red Sonja (Vol. 5) #16
Writer: Mark Russell

Cover: Jae Lee

She is Sonja the Red, the Master of War. But is anyone really its master? Or, as Dynamite Entertainment‘s Red Sonja (Vol. 5) #16 seems to tell us, is the truth that no one really wins in a war?

Least of all ordinary people. Particularly the children.

Writer Mark Russell continues chronicling Year Two, when the She-Devil we all know and love was still the young Sonja the Red. And as I mentioned in my review, the mini-series Killing Red Sonja spins out from the events in this title. This issue even briefly shows what’s happening to Emperor Cyril and tells readers to follow his adventures in the mini-series.

Vampirella: Why church people are not Christians

Did God also create vampires? This is just one of the many thought-provoking ideas discussed in Vampirella (Vol. 5) #10, which is one the best comic books I have read in a long time.

Vampirella (Vol. 5) #10

Did God also create vampires? This is just one of the thought-provoking ideas discussed in Dynamite Entertainment‘s Vampirella (Vol. 5) #10, which is one of the best comic books I have read in a while.

Christopher Priest’s magical prose and non-linear storytelling, combined with the gorgeous yet disturbing art of Ergün Gündüz, elevates this tale about the tragic plane crash that changed Vampirella’s life.

This vampire has hit rock bottom. Like a dark goddess, she has wrought terrible vengeance on her enemies. And yet here is a man quietly conversing with her, trying to convince her — and maybe himself — that somehow she is still one of God’s creations.

The Boys are back and what’s wrong with Wee Hughie?

Now that Amazon has announced that Season 2 of "The Boys" will arrive on Sept. 4, it's great that we can read Dynamite Entertainment‘s The Boys: Dear Becky while we count down the days.

The Boys: Dear Becky #2
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: Russ Braun
Cover: Darick Robertson
FC | 32 pages | Superhero Satire | $3.99 | Mature

If the TV series on Prime Video shocked you, keep in mind that it actually toned down some aspects of the comic book version of The Boys. And now that Amazon has announced that Season 2 will arrive on Sept. 4, it’s great that we can read Dynamite Entertainment‘s The Boys: Dear Becky while we count down the days.

I loved the TV series, but I have to admit that this is my first time to read the actual comic book even though I’m a comic book geek. For those who haven’t read the comic books or watched the TV series, The Boys are a team of vigilantes. They were formed to police and even liquidate superhumans created by Vought-American.

The Boys: Dear Becky mini-series takes place 12 years after the events in The Boys #72: “You Found Me”. It features Hughie Campbell a.k.a. Wee Hughie. After thinking that the past has been buried, he receives a series of documents. These shed new light on his days in The Boys — specifically with information on Billy Butcher and his late wife, Becky. Spoilers ahead.

Killing Red Sonja: Boy emperor takes on Sonja the Red

Killing Red Sonja #2 has wowed me with this lighthearted story about a boy emperor's quest to kill Sonja the Red. Image credit: Dynamite Entertainment

Killing Red Sonja #2
Writers: Mark Russell, Bryce Ingman
Artist: Craig Rousseau
Cover: Christian Ward
FC | 32 pages | Action/Adventure | $3.99 | Teen+

I’m getting used to Red Sonja comic books being funny. After enjoying the humor in Red Sonja: Age of Chaos #4, now Dynamite Entertainment‘s Killing Red Sonja #2 has wowed me with this lighthearted story about a boy emperor’s quest to kill Sonja the Red.

Of course, since this is a Red Sonja comic, lighthearted means witty dialogue and funny situations interspersed with maiming and killing. Mark Russell and Bryce Ingman have come up with a very enjoyable issue in this mini-series that spins out from the Red Sonja title written by Russell. With Craig Rousseau’s beautiful, fairy tale-like art perfectly complementing the writing.

It’s indirectly a tale about Sonja the Red — the young and untamed orphan who will one day be known as Red Sonja. But it’s really the story of the young Prince Cyril, now Emperor of Zamora, who is out to avenge his father Dragan the Magnificent, who was killed by Sonja the Red. Spoilers ahead.

Welcome to the world of Graveyard Wars. Image credit: ABLAZE

Imagine that people among us, all of whom have had a near-death experience, now have an ability called a Soul-Skill. This allows them to access the skill sets of the dead. Fighter. Surgeon. Sniper. Anything. Welcome to the world of Graveyard Wars.

ABLAZE  has announced that it will publish Graveyard Wars as a series of original graphic novels, with the first graphic novel set for publication this September. Graveyard Wars is written and created by AJ Lieberman, illustrated and colored by Andrew Sebastian Kwan, and lettered (with color design) by Darren Rawlings.

Graveyard Wars is my first new book in a few years and my only goal was to be sure from a story and art standpoint it surpassed the others. And I think we did it. It’s a fun, action story that doesn’t fully reveal itself until the very last page. My only other hope? That it would attract the attention of a director/producer like Chad Stahelski so I can hear all the batshit stuff that goes on during the [John] Wick movies,” Leiberman said in a press statement.

Frank Cho’s Jungle Girl Complete Omnibus
Writers: Frank Cho, Doug Murray
Artists: Frank Cho, Adriano Batista, Jack Jadson
Cover: Frank Cho
FC | 392 pages | $39.99 | Action/Adventure | Teen +

Who needs the lord of the jungle when Jungle Girl is around? Frank Cho’s Jungle Girl Complete Omnibus is an exhilarating adventure starring the beautiful, charismatic, and deadly Jana Sky-Born.

This omnibus from Dynamite Entertainment contains all three seasons of the Jungle Girl series, collected for the first time in one book. Writer and artist Cho doesn’t waste time, plunging us right into epic action from the start.

In fact, epic is an understatement. We’re talking Jana Sky-Born hunting Mosasaurus for food. I was hooked immediately, and it really sets the tone for this graphic novel. It’s larger than life, taking place on an unknown island that’s somehow a Lost World with cavemen, dinosaurs, and other creatures from different eras. Spoilers ahead.

Philippine mythology will now reach an even bigger audience. Portland-based ABLAZE has announced that it will bring the critically-acclaimed Filipino comic book series TRESE by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo to readers worldwide. TRESE is a three-time winner of the Philippine National Book Award for Best Graphic Literature of the Year. It won in 2009, 2011, and 2012.

ABLAZE will release the series of graphic novels, starting with TRESE Vol 1: Murder on Balete Drive this September. When the sun sets in the city of Manila, don’t you dare make a wrong turn and end up in that dimly-lit side of the metro, where blood-sucking aswang run the most-wanted kidnapping rings, where gigantic kapre are the kingpins of crime, and magical engkantos slip through the cracks and steal your most precious possessions. When crime takes a turn for the weird, the police call Alexandra Trese.

In a press statement, writer Tan talked about how TRESE started.

“When we started TRESE back in 2005, we did it for fun, because we wanted to tell stories about Philippine myth and folklore through the lens of a detective story. We photocopied 30 copies and sold it for less than a dollar. Most of copies ended up with friends. Thankfully, more people wanted to read our stories. So, we are extremely excited to have partnered up with ABLAZE and now have a chance to share with the world the wonders and mysteries of Philippine mythology to a new set of readers,” Tan said.
