Wartortoise: Meet Legion ambassador Paolo Umpa

Lenovo Legion ambassador Paolo Umpa a.k.a. Wartortoise is grateful for the many life skills he learned through gaming.

Even as a kid, Lenovo Legion ambassador Paolo Umpa, better known online as Wartortoise, knew that gaming would help him catch ’em all and succeed in life. In fact, Umpa’s family introduced him to gaming, setting him on the path that would one day make him Wartortoise.

“I was given a Game Boy when I was in grade school, and Pokémon Crystal was the first game I ever played,” Umpa told Digital Life Asia.

According to Umpa, gaming isn’t just entertaining, but also educational.

“Gaming’s fun since I get to connect with different people. I played with an 11-year old, and he’s way better than me in League of Legends hahaha! It’s very cliché, but it’s still true — more than the pure excitement that you get from playing, it also teaches you camaraderie and teamwork. Growing up, video games taught me a lot and I’d say that it’s one of my main sources of learning English (other than TV). It also introduces you to many things. God of War: Chains of Olympus fueled my interest in Greek mythology, and Octopath Traveler opened me to different life perspectives,” he said.

Lenovo Legion ambassador Lyka Mea loves gaming and being part of the gaming community.

As a young girl, Lyka Mea saw her older sister playing The Sims. Little did the future Lenovo Legion ambassador know that this moment would change her life.

“My older sister was the one who introduced me to gaming. I saw her playing The Sims back in the day and I just had to try it out for myself. We eventually started playing Ragnarok Online, and to this day, it continues to be one of my guilty pleasure games,” Mea told Digital Life Asia.

According to her, gaming completely changed her life. She even noticed that her “wants” started to lessen.

“Everything became simpler for me. It felt like as long as I had gaming, I could be content with my life. I know it sounds so deep, but it is what it is. On the plus side, gaming has opened new career paths for me as well, especially in the realm of esports. I love being in this industry and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she said.

Meditative trance via SoundSelf immersive video game

Meditative trance via SoundSelf

Are you ready for an out-of-body experience while staying safe at home? A calming, meditative trance may just be what you need in this time of crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Publisher Andromeda Entertainment says that SoundSelf: A Technodelic is the first video game to produce transcendent states of consciousness guided by your own voice. SoundSelf will be available on April 22 for Mac, PC, Steam, and Oculus Rift. This immersive experience aims to take you to a higher state of consciousness.

“Video games are an incredibly powerful medium for inducing trance states. Just look at any child fall into a game to see for yourself. Weaving music, cinematic graphics, and interactivity, there’s nothing else in the world that can capture a player’s attention with as much sophistication as a video game. It just so happens, however, that most designers are not using that incredible sophistication to intentionally shift the player’s consciousness,” Andromeda Entertainment CEO and Co-Founder Robin Arnott told Digital Life Asia via email.

Time for gamers to become real-life heroes. Game companies have joined forces with the World Health Organization to launch the #PlayApartTogether campaign. By disseminating WHO’s health guidelines to their vast network of players, they hope to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

“We’re at a crucial moment in defining outcomes of this pandemic. Games industry companies have a global audience - we encourage all to #PlayApartTogether. More physical distancing + other measures will help to flatten the curve + save lives,” WHO Ambassador for Global Strategy Ray Chambers tweeted.

Through games, the #PlayApartTogether campaign will promote preventive measures such as physical distancing, hand hygiene, and respiratory etiquette.
